The Rabbit Factory Marshall Karp Books
I really love the Lomax and Biggs series, and yes I know I read them out of order but I don't think that it mattered. They are looking for the people killing off employees of Familyland. There are plenty of suspects to weed through not to mention also dealing with the Governor, Mayor and other politicians who want this solved yesterday. I really didn't notice how long the book was it was so well written and interesting, I just lost track of time. You learn all the characters which helps you understand their role in the story. You follow along how they find the truth , sometimes with an unexpected clue from someone close by. They are twists and turns in the true Marshall Karp fashion. REALLY enjoyed this book. The Rabbit Factory Marshall Karp Books Reviews
This is my first Marshall Karp book and it won't be my last. I have already started reading the next one in this Lomax and Biggs series. These two lead characters are very easy to like! The murder mystery in The Rabbit Factory is the perfect mix of suspense, drama and comedy. I read cop fiction almost exclusively and this book was a great find for me. I look forward to reading more Karp books.
This is the first book by this author that I have read. I actually found it when I was looking for a book by one of my favorite authors and somebody had suggested this book instead. This book has characters that have depth and are fully developed. The story is new and not redundant of something that another author has written in the past. It is about a fantasy park that has something go wrong even after employees are carefully selected. Who has a vendetta against the park? Many twists and turns later the villain is reveled. Excellent story. A real page turner. I had difficulty putting it down. I wanted so much to know who the villain was, but then again, I didn't want it to end. No disappointment. Even the ending was good. I will be looking for more great books from this author!
This book is unusually long – 600+ pages – for a first novel. They tend to be short with later novels in the series growing longer with each entry. Here, the opposite is true. The remaining three novels are all around 300 pages.
Some of that length may be due to Karp providing lots of backstory about his primary characters, but he handles it so well, it doesn’t bog the story down.
Karp fills the whole novel with subtle humor while delivering a complex plot full of unexpected turns and several subplots that are equally compelling - one could have been a novel on it's own.
Mike Lomax is a fully developed main character.
The next book in the series is already on my ‘To Read’ list.
The Rabbit Factory is based on the Random Factor by Tannenbaum & LaRosa. (Same initials. cute.). Like Random Factor it is a serial homocide being gamed by a group of perps, who we are being given glimpses of from time to time so we almost know what's going on. The solvers, the perps, the motive, the methods have all been swapped out for completely new sets. It has been very well done and by using the Random Factor's framework, a lot of the writer's plotting problems have been solved.
I'm extremely impressed. The book made good reading and I had almost as much fun comparing the Factory to the Factor as I'd reading the Factory. (Or Factor). Anybody could love it on its own, but if you have already read The Random Factor, it adds a whole new dimension. Or vice versa. Once you have read Rabbit Factory, read Random Factor.
Now I've ordered a copy of The True Believer by Eric Hoffer. Read Rabbit Factory and you'll see why.
I have been around cops since the late 70's. The ones I know and love are funny. They have to be. The job is too hard if they can't laugh.
This is a good police procedural with funny cops. Cops who are trying to cope with personal loss can still enjoy a laugh, just like real life. Dark humor, deep plot and real life characters; my favorite things.
When someone kills a character at a cartoon theme park, it starts a plot line nobody could foresee except Karp. This book kept me reading. I figured out who was responsible early. If you are paying attention you can. I also kind of expected the surprise member of the organization to be who it was. What I didn't anticipate was all the juicy stuff, good dialog and real emotions too.
This is a very involved book, and I doubt Karp will come up with a plot this deep in characterizations again. That's OK. Most first novels are rough, this one isn't. I have high hopes for this series.
Man this was fun! What an amazing ride that was. I found this book after watching Battle Creek on Netflix. It was a really hilarious cop show that sadly ran for only one season.
After finishing the last episode I searched Ye Olde Google for “funny detective books” and found this one. Perfect...exactly what I was looking for.
My favorite part of this book? The characters are good people. Well, maybe not the ones committing atrocities, but the good guys. They’re really good guys.
It is so refreshing to read a story where a father and son get along and love each other instead of argue. And where characters don’t need to go home and get wasted or do drugs because their day was tough. And where men and women don’t have to cheat on each other to create intrigue for the story.
This book is just fun as hell with really good good guys and pretty bad bad guys. Lots of ethics. Lots of fun. Lots of laughs. The two main characters have a fantastic relationship and the dialogue is witty and sharp and probably a lot like how you talk to your friends.
Hope the author keeps his characters just as strong and ethical in the next books. I’m convinced the author must be a really good dude to hang out with.
