This book lends credance to things I was told by my great grandfather. Being an African American descendant of the Singleton's of Edisto Island,South Carolina this book gave me an extensive insight on the journey my ancestors endured. I was surprised how accurate it was written. This is where and how my life began and a chronicle of how my ancestors lived. There were some details in this book that shocked me because I had been told very similar accounts of my families rise to freedom. Enjoyed immensely and have shared with every family member that's alive today because of these strong, powerful people!Product details

My Life in the South Jacob Stroyer 9781141752546 Books Reviews
This a a heart felt and powerful story about slavery and the life story of the author. It spoke about slavery from the 1st narrative, and contained facts that I was unaware of. I could not put the book down and highly recommend it.
This book provides an insight into this time in our history from one who experienced it. About mid-way through the book, I felt it was becoming repetitive but was able to be drawn back when I considered it was written as a Lenten reflection or teaching.
This book is written by a man who experienced slavery in his youth. He was actually semi-"privileged" in that he didn't have to toil in the fields. That didn't mean he escaped abuse or hardship by any means. A wonderful read that really should be required reading for the month of February (Black History Month) in our school systems. We all need to understand what life was truly like in those times.
I found this to be a very interesting book that describes slavery from the view of one who was subjected to it. Surprisingly the author does not dwell on anger or vengence in his writing. While he certainly apprises the reader of the terrible treatment of the slaves with their constant whippings, he does not condemn the slave owners in blanket terms. Obviously he appreciated the good acts of some and despised others. A very good read. Well written. Informative. a good read from a perspective seldom seen.

A little disjunct, and at times hard to follow, My Life in the South paints another stroke in the picture of what it was really like in the South just before and during the Civil War. Rare, though limited, view into the famous Fort Sumter workings. Great read. Highly recommend for any Civil War, slavery or South Carolina history buff.
This is an honest and straight forward memoir of a former servant in the Old South. The author doesn’t pull any punches on his opinions, observations, and memories of his years as a servant and subsequent freedom. I recommend reading this book for students of the Old South and as a reference to research of the same. I liked this book immensely.
Overall, this autobiographical book seems mostly reliable but the following quote from the introduction gives a good idea of what to expect. "Mr. Stroyer's book is a setting forth in a fresh and unique manner of the old and bitter wrongs of American slavery." Of course. There was little market for anything else and, as related in the introduction, Stroyer wrote this volume to make money. Money for a worthy cause, but still written to make money which required at least a degree of sensationalism. Details of his time in the Confederate labor force would, undoubtedly, have been interesting and perhaps historically significant. However, he says very little about it other than that he was glad to be sent there, he was able to continue his education, and he was wounded. All in all, another book on the evils of American slavery, not slavery as a general concept but specifically American slavery. This review is from the free e-book published May 17, 2012.
