Killing Ruby Rose eBook Jessie Humphries

I've had this sitting on my Kindle for a while, but feared diving in because... well, let me be honest, there a girl on the cover. Sure, sure, the title has the word "Killing" in it. Still, it's a girl. In high heals. Without any guys in it! There's not even a fast-looking car. NOT EVEN FOOD!! So while I originally picked it up because some others recommended it, I still wasn't particularly excited to give it a go.

And then I made this horrible, terrible mistake of thinking, "I need something to help me unwind and get to sleep. Hey, maybe that Ruby Red or whatever it's called book will do it."

BUAHAHA!! Nope!

I rarely read a book cover to cover, but at 5am I finished. I've got the second book, so I'm immediately jumping into that one now too. If you can't tell, I loved it!!

The action: LOTS!!

Gunplay: LOTS!!

Cars: Could use more car chases, but I did like how she thought of her black car. Swearing: Not a lot. A coupe of S-words, which is good. It's refreshing to find a gritty thriller that isn't littered with the F-bomb every time it hits dialogue. Thank you for that, Humphries!

Romance: Okay, not that I'm looking for romance. I think that was my fear, was that this would have too much of it and I'd be reading along bored thinking, "Would you stop making out with him and go shoot somebody already?" I actually liked the romantic elements in this book. I even liked Liam and kind of cheered for him while he pursued the attention of Ruby Rose. It made it so I didn't even mind the kissy scenes.

Humor: I laughed out loud multiple times through this book. My two favorite parts was Liam trying to get her attention outside her window in what is probably the opposite of what you'd see in Romeo and Juliet, and Ruby's reaction to seeing a door propped open by an expensive pair of shoes. I hope I didn't give too much away, but this book had some great and funny dialogue.

Narrative Voice: This is what helped clench this book for me, I just felt so comfortable with the voice Humphries gave Ruby Rose. I really enjoyed her outlook on the world and how she perceived people. It made me want to keep reading, and at the end, it made me want to read more (so I did, I immediately started book 2... after I got some sleep).

So, yes, I highly recommend this, alongside the so many other people who do as well. Considering this is a debut novel from somebody who seems eager to keep releasing books, I'm excited to see what else she is going to thrill us with.

Killing Ruby Rose eBook Jessie Humphries Reviews

Just like everyone else...thank God it was free.

Aside from rampant passive voice that sucks the life out of this book, the character is unpalatable. She's a work of contradictions a loner with a perky best friend she blends with perfectly, the center of attention of the most attractive guy <i>ever<i>.

I'm afraid I'll repeat the opinions of others if I make this review a lengthy one. For those looking for a book to read, please pay particular attention to the 3 stars and below. Most have very valid points. If you can ignore bad writing, stupid character decisions made by a girl with a 4.0 GPA and a repeatedly highlighted raging intellect, and unbelievable plot situations, go right ahead and read on.

Please don't go into this book thinking it's "just like Veronica Mars." Because it really isn't. Rob Thomas didn't have to point out over and over again how book-smart Veronica was. A couple of mentions of the valedictorian spot and her initial ability to answer a literature question even thought she'd been asleep in the first episode, was more than enough to let us know she was book smart.

Veronica also had other plans rather than ignoring everyone and barreling into dangerous situations armed with years of training and a gun and knife. Poor Ruby just can't think outside of the box, outside of any box.

But yes, the book did have promise. Just no coherent follow-through.
I won't include any spoilers in this review. This is the first book I've read by Humphries, and I feel comfortable giving it a 4-star rating. The author is very successful at putting you inside Ruby's head (main character). There is a lot of imagery and detail in the book, but it is definitely within the teen and young adult category. It's a quick, easy read, and almost leaves me looking for more of a challenge (but I understand the target audience here). The book is about a smart high school girl that is avenging her father's death, and the struggles of that adventure. There are a lot of plot twists, keeping you wondering what will happen next. The book is based in the present, so there are references to current phrases and words and a fun take on life by an awkward teenage girl. I look forward to reading the 2nd and final book in the series.
