This story pulls you into the witches world right from the beginning but doesn't bombard you with so much information that you get overwhelmed! The characters are likable and easy to follow along with. This book is an easy read that keeps your interest and makes you want to learn more about this family! I love these kinds of books but they are not always written this well! I can't wait for the next one!!!
This book is perfect for those that like Nora Roberts. Neely Powell hits the mark with a well developed cast of characters.
New Mourne is a safe haven for those with supernatural powers. The Connelly witches are responsible for the town's acceptance of the supernatural, but they are also the cause of a malevolent period of time in each generation. This is always culminated in the death of a Connelly witch. Brenna must find her way to bring her family together and fight this evil.
The writing was superb, but there were some minor editing mistakes. Awakening Magic was a wonderful read and left me looking forward to getting to know the Connelly's even better in the next book.
A supernatural story about a family of withes and their important role in their community. The story combines supernatural elements with everyday life issues, such as a family needing to pull together, making it very easy for many readers to relate too. The characters are also very likeable and well developed. The typos in the story were a bit distracting for me, as I reread the line the way it should have been. This is not a huge deal, but I feel something that could easily be corrected with a editor. I can definitely see this being a successful series and recommend it to any reader that enjoys the supernatural genre.
The Connelly witches have a long-standing history in their town. For generations they have protected one another and the town itself by defeating the dark magic cast upon it. When one of the sister's fiancee passes away suddenly, they know that the Woman in White is up to no good. Can they stop the inevitability of what is next? While I enjoyed the author's prose, I found the story slightly overly detailed where it became difficult to follow after a while. Needless to say I still enjoyed the story and believe that anyone who enjoys this type of literature will as well.
If you like drama and romance, mixed with the supernatural, then this is the book for you. Author Neely Powell does a very good job at telling the story of a family of witches and other supes in the small town of New Mourne. We follow Brenna, one of the witches, who has just returned home after leaving years ago in hopes of escaping the family curse. She is determined to break the curse no matter what it takes with the help of her sisters and other surprising allies. However, we quickly find out that there is more going on in their small, quiet town.
Overall, the book held my interest and I couldn’t wait to get to the end to see what happened. Turns out, there was a cliffhanger! I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. It was an easy read and very entertaining. It had a good amount of drama and romance. There were, however, quite a few typos that I noticed throughout the book. Besides that, the author did a very good job of being so detailed that my imagination had no problem forming visuals in my head!
Early on we are introduced to the magical women of the Connelly clan. Many years ago one of their relatives made a sacrifice in order to protect the town of New Mourne. As legend has it, one of the females from the current generation is more or less sacrificed to this lady in white. This is the first book I've read from the duo of Neely Powell. It didn't take long for me to get drawn into this story. Brenna, one of the Connelly witches who is up for the taking, was an easy character to love. Although there were a few editing mistakes, it was overall a great read. Without ruining too much, I could definitely see how this book can become a series and would love to see where they take Brenna and her family.
Awakening Magic by Neely Powell is a paranormal story, with a touch of romance, about a family of witches that have carved out a safe haven for themselves and others like them in north Georgia. When an old enemy returns to their normally quite community they must use their strength as a family unit to protect and save the ones they love.
Brenna Burns, one of the Connelly coven witches, has recently returned to New Mourne after spending several years in Atlanta. She is not the only entity that has returned to the small town. You see, every generation a Woman in White demands a sacrifice of one of the coven’s own as a tribute. As a precursor to the sacrifice of one of the Connelly witches an evil settles over the town causing death and destruction.
Things appear to be different this time when Garth, the local sheriff, is killed by the Woman in White. She has always only demanded a Connelly witch. Unfortunately, none of the Connelly witches know for sure because pieces of their family book of magic and history are missing. Jake, a deputy and shape shifter, takes over the duties of Sheriff and joins the Connelly women to find a way to end the deaths. He discovers the Connelly women are not as united a front as everyone believes. It will be left to Brenna to find the missing pieces of the book and bring the family unit together to defeat this evil once and for all.
This is an excellent story about strong women and family bonds that just happens to include various paranormal elements. The plot has multiple twists that are unexpected and a lot of diverse characters. It made for a quick read. I also liked the romance between Jake and Brenna, though mostly in the background, it fitted in nicely with the story line.
I can easily say this book would make a great beach read. I recommend Awakening Magic to people who like paranormal stories and stories with an emphasis on family relationships.
